Gathered As One

This worship song was written during my second last year as university chaplain at the University of Western Ontario and Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. It’s a gathering song meant for the “Opening of Worship.” The three verses can stand on their own, but I added the “Come, Oh sinner come” refrain in 2019 to add an invitational aspect.
This hymn was initially published in Songs of Rejoicing (Selah Publishing, 1989). The melody is called “Alila”, a combination of my parents’ names (Alice and Lammert) that they coined when they named their boat.

Gathered As One

Gathered as one we are surrounded
By those who love the living Lord
Eagerly we enter his presence
Called by the power of the word
Prayerfully awaiting his blessing
Out of the riches he has in store

Gathered as one in our commitment
Out of a world of compromise
Gladly discard all our defenses
For a new life of sacrifice
Drawn together, sweet liberation
Into his truth and out of our lies

Come, Oh sinner come
See what God has done
Come and feel his love
Set your eyes above

Gathered as one in God’s new family
Children adopted through the Son
Taking on the name of the Saviour
Heirs of the victory he’s won
Praise the Lord! His covenant keeping
Moves us to worship making us one

Come, Oh sinner come
See what God has done
Come and feel his love
Set your eyes above

Gathered as one we are surrounded
By those who love the living Lord
