Water And Oil

Disagreements and differences have always threatened to divide us. But the ongoing pandemic and the current political climate has led to empty chairs at family reunions and missing persons in church services. After experiencing these painful conflicts over divisive issues both communally and personally, I had another sleepless night. The next morning this song came into being. Several months later it led to a sermon and a Christian Courier article meant to help us move forward together. Not as “water and oil.” But as “two wings needed to fly straight.

Water And Oil

Now that we know we disagree
How will we do life together?
How will we weather this storm?

Will we just go on our separate ways
As people are inclined to do?
Will we behave like water and oil?
I can’t stand the thought of losing you

Some signal right and some lean left
My flag means this; yours means something else<
Though it’s the very same cloth

Will we just go on our separate ways
As people are inclined to do?
Will we behave like water and oil?
I can’t stand the thought of losing you

We’re on a bridge that could collapse
Under the weight of our differences
How can we lighten this load?

Will we just go on our separate ways
As people are inclined to do?
Will we behave like water and oil?
I can’t stand the thought of losing you

Two wings are needed to fly straight
Imagine both wings together
What could we do as one?

Will we just go on our separate ways
As people are inclined to do?
Will we behave like water and oil?
I can’t stand the thought of losing you

Will we just go on our separate ways
As people are inclined to do?
Will we behave like water and oil?
I can’t stand the thought of losing you
I can’t stand the thought of losing you
