Who Am I Now?

At the end of a long career, easing into what some call retirement, I found myself asking “Who am I now?” and “How will God use my life now?” At the end of the day, doesn’t it all come down to simply loving God, neighbour and self (cf. Matthew 22:37-39)? And when we love, don’t “doing” and “being” become indistinguishable, two sides of the same coin, regardless of our situation or season?

Who Am I Now?

Who am I now that the doing is done?
Who am I now that the being has begun?
How will I live?
What will I give?
Who am I now that I’m sailing under a setting sun?

How will I make my life still meaningful?
What will it take to make it memorable?
Where will I go?
Who will I serve?
How will God use my life to help a hurting soul?

Intrinsic value, inherent worth
Not like silver or gold
A single purpose and a double goal
Love my neighbour and Lord

When will I learn the wisdom next to none
Which says that “do” and “be”
are meant to work as one?
