Safe Today

This paraphrase of Psalm 121 is a happy, rag-timey version of one of the Ascent Psalms that the Israelites would sing as they walked to Jerusalem for one of the annual festivals at the Temple. Marja and I refer to it as our “traveling psalm” and we’ve claimed it as our wedding text, even though no-one, including my Dad who officiated at our wedding, can remember what Bible passage he used when he married us in Edmonton.
The lyrics and music is a kind of lullaby, too. Imagine singing it or playing it to a child before saying goodnight after another eventful day.

Safe Today

I lift up my eyes to the hills
From where does my help come
My help comes from the Lord, my God
Who made the heavens, earth and me

The Lord will keep me from all harm
Keep my life safe in his arms
My going out and my coming in
Safe today and forevermore

He will not let your feet be moved
He will not slumber or sleep
The Lord’s your keeper and your shade
The sun won’t smite you or the moon

The Lord will keep you from all harm
Keep your life safe in his arms
Your going out and your coming in
Safe today and forevermore

The Lord will keep us from all harm
Keep our lives safe in his arms
Our going out and our coming in
Safe today and forevermore
