Our front porch faces West, making it the perfect place to watch the sun set and the evening traffic go by as another day ends. We enjoy imagining where everyone used to go and might be going today on Laclie Street, part of the old highway that linked Toronto and the North. Many years ago our vantage point witnessed more than three million tourists go to North Bay to see the Dionne Quintuplets – Emilie, Marie, Annette, Yvonne, Cecile – who were born on May 28, 1934, a mere four years before our little white house was built.
Our house is very tiny,
not long and not so wide
The kind of house that fools you
until you get inside
The kind of place that grabs you
because it warms your heart
With home made chairs and chiming clock
and soul inspiring art
We’re on the road that took folks
to see the Dionne Quints
Earlier than that our street
saw wagons and hoofprints
Today it may seem noisy
Especially on the porch
But that’s our favourite place to sit
and see the tar get scorched
All I really know as I watch you go
I’m viewing the world
from the very best seat on Laclie Street
Chasing a dream
Or fleeing a scene?
What’s got you racing
through our side of town?
Watching you swerve
on the sand in the curve
Are things looking up?
or are they headed down?
What’s got you speeding
at this time of day?
Are you heading home
or getting far away?
Eyes focused straight ahead
Hands on the wheel
Can’t read your face
I can’t tell how you feel
All I really know as I watch you go
I’m viewing the world
from the very best seat on Laclie Street
Are you in love
Or did you just break up?
What would you say
if I asked you, “Hey, what’s up?”
Did you blow a kiss
or shout an angry word?
As you turned the key
what’s the last thing you heard?
You’re on the ancient highway
that leads to anywhere
Truckers, cars and cyclists
all going who knows where
May your travels bring you
to a hopeful place
May this old road leave you
In a better space
All I really know as I watch you go
I’m viewing the world
from the very best seat on Laclie Street
All I really know as I watch you go
I’m viewing the world
from the very best seat on Laclie Street
