The 90’s began with a bang. Literally! My running partner, Syl Gerritsma, and I went for a training run on March 1, 1990, and were struck from behind by a ‘79 Chevy. One of Syl’s legs was shattered. Both of my legs sustained multiple fractures and my head broke the car’s windshield. I almost died. Thankfully, both of us recovered and were actually able to compete in marathons.
Of the thirty-five songs that I wrote during this decade, less than twenty are keepers. One of them is the first song that I wrote after the accident, called, “We Have Each Other Still.” Jubilee Fellowship welcomed me to use my musical gifts on their praise teams and I put together the occasional solo concert of original music for those who were interested. But parish ministry is very different from campus ministry and the dream of performing regularly became just that, a dream.
During these years I gave up the 12 string guitar that I used on the two studio albums, lost my well-used Yahama guitar on a leadership retreat, and bought the Takamine NP-15C that I still use today.
